What can you see in this surrealist painting?
The painting "Existential Dualism" by Mariusz Lewandowski presents a deeply unsettling vision of a human struggling with themselves, in the context of existence and internal conflict. The central figure is a humanoid form wrapped in thin, white threads or webs, which resemble binding restraints. These threads seem to symbolize limitations imposed by inner conflicts, past experiences, emotions, or societal norms. The figure is attempting to break free, tearing at the threads, symbolizing the struggle to overcome these constraints and regain control over their own life.
The figure’s head is obscured, suggesting confusion, uncertainty, and a lack of full identity. The hidden face emphasizes the inner chaos and the inability to find oneself in the surrounding reality. In the figure’s left hand, they hold a knife, hinting at desperation or perhaps even symbolic self-harm – a battle with oneself in an effort to break free from mental or emotional constraints.
In the background, a dark and ominous landscape can be seen, with bloody streaks and floating dark objects, possibly representing destructive forces, external threats, or moods of despair. Hovering above the figure is an ethereal shape resembling a skull or ghost, which could be interpreted as an allegory of death, the passage of time, or the weight of existential awareness that all life ultimately ends.
Despite the dark tone, the painting is not entirely pessimistic. The act of struggling against the bonds and the attempt to break free suggests the possibility of overcoming limitations and finding a path to inner freedom, even if it comes through a painful process. The lone figure in the bottom of the painting, standing amidst the dark landscape, may symbolize any of us – an observer who faces the choices and struggles that life inevitably brings.
