What can you see on painting THE SPLENDORS OF THE HOLY IQUISITION by painter Mariusz Lewandowski?
"THE SPLENDORS OF THE HOLY IQUISITION", created in 2015 by Mariusz Lewandowski, measuring 120x80 cm, is a striking oil painting that confronts viewers with its dramatic intensity and powerful message. The title alludes to one of the darkest periods in church history—the era of the Holy Inquisition, where beneath the facade of spiritual purity lay the brutal reality of repression and persecution.
The composition is dominated by a desolate landscape filled with charred, burned stakes that resemble crosses—a symbolic reference to the pyres used to burn heretics in times past. Perched on one of these wooden posts is a black crow, a bird often associated with the inevitability of death and dark omens, heightening the sense of unease.
In the background, monumental structures reminiscent of walls or towers loom, topped with crosses, shrouded in misty, almost ethereal light. These could signify heaven or represent religious authority towering over the ruins and destruction below. Flames still engulf the land, and dark clouds churn ominously, creating a stark contrast with the lighter areas of the sky, reflecting the tension between forces of destruction and perceived sanctity.
Lewandowski, with his distinctive surrealist style, portrays a painful chapter in history while also questioning the limits of religious power and the morality of those acting in its name. The fire depicted on the canvas symbolizes purification but also pain and devastation, and the entire composition invites contemplation on the role the Inquisition played in shaping history.
Through dynamic brushstrokes and contrasting colors, the artist creates an atmosphere of unease and horror, where the line between what is sacred and what is destructive becomes increasingly blurred.
